AJ Pero

I must've been hot when I was young! ;-)

AJ Pero is one of rock's most incredible yet underrated drummers, and I don't just say that because he became a dear friend of mine!  Long before I'd ever met him, AJ's powerful rhythms pounded deep into my soul... after all, drums make magic and open the base chakra.  As the daughter of a bass player, I've a fondness for the rhythm section so it's no surprise AJ and I clicked from Day One.

AJ was the first musician I ever had as a pen pal, and it was exciting and flattering to find his letters and cards in my mailbox from time to time.  Whenever he'd be coming to LA for a shoot, convention or other business, I'd get a call from him and we'd meet for drinks or dinner and shoot the shit.  We had a lot of laughs and some great times, but fell out of touch after a few years.

Ok, I admit it... I had quite the crush on the guy :-)  Alas, he was not only a married man but a relatively famous one who lived 3000 miles away.  To say the odds were against our friendship becoming anything more would be a gross understatement!  Ah well, what's done is done, and is likely for the best... considering we're both Italian it would likely have been a stormy union anyway!  *sigh*

A few years ago I contacted AJ after finding Taunter's website and asking him to relay a message for me.  We talked on the phone and caught each other up on our lives.  I think we both found it amusing that my husband, Rob, is a drummer... and as such is a big fan of AJ's.  Maybe one of these days our paths will cross again, perhaps having a big ol' family barbecue where the drummers can jam a little.  Hey, it could happen!

Fortunately, I managed to save at least some of our correspondence despite several moves over more than 15 years time.  Click on a thumbnail for a larger version.
